 Exchange Rates: An Introduction
First in a series of articles

The Philippine Peso/Dollar exchange rate is very important, since a higher exchange rate means that your recipients receive more Pesos for every Dollar you send. With our first monthly newsletter, we begin a series of articles that explores some of the ins and outs of exchange rates.

The exchange rate is quoted as the number of Pesos you can buy with $1. So if you’re sending Pesos to the Philippines, you want the Dollar to strengthen (appreciate) and the Peso to weaken (depreciate) so that your Dollars buy more Pesos.

When the exchange rate goes down, the Peso is getting stronger. For example, a newspaper would say that the Peso “traded as high as 44.45 this morning, a big jump from 45.06 the previous day.” News articles can be confusing because when the Peso “strengthens” or “goes higher” it means that the exchange rate is declining or getting worse!

Just remember: a weaker Peso means a higher exchange rate and a stronger Peso means a lower exchange rate.

In our next issue: Factors that influence the Peso/Dollar exchange rate.

 Ask remithome: Delivery Methods

Question: remithome offers three delivery methods: Door-to-Door Delivery, Bank Deposit, and Cash Pick-Up. Which delivery method is best for me?

Answer: The best delivery method depends mostly on your recipient. The most important considerations are (1) location, (2) convenience, and (3) delivery time.

  • Locationremithome delivers Door to Door to over 90% of locations in the Philippines – in Metro Manila and in the Provinces. However, if your recipient is in a very remote area, you might want to consider a Bank Deposit directly into your recipient’s bank account. We deposit to all major banks in the Philippines. For a list of banks, click here. If your recipient doesn’t have a bank account, you can arrange for Cash Pick–Up at a convenient cash pick–up location. For a list of available Cash Pick–Up locations, click here.
  • Convenience – If your recipient is generally at home or in the office, Door–to–Door delivery might be convenient. On the other hand, if your recipient is frequently in and out of the house or office, consider Bank Deposit or Cash Pick–Up.
  • Delivery Time – Which method has the shortest delivery time depends a lot on your recipient’s location. In general, Cash Pick–Up will have the shortest delivery time and Bank Deposits are next. However, in certain locations such as Metro Manila, Door–to–Door delivery may actually be faster, because bank couriers also deliver on weekends. For Bank Deposits and Cash Pick–Up at Bank Branches, delivery can only be made on business days, Monday through Friday excluding Philippine holidays.
