Coping with Volcanoes in the Philippines

The recent eruption of Bulusan volcano in Sorsogon Province reminds us that the Philippines has over 200 volcanoes. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) provides a map showing active, potentially-active, and inactive volcanoes in the Philippines. The article below profiles some of the useful information provided by PHIVOLCS on volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunami in the Philippines.

Information about Volcanoes and Earthquakes in the Philippines

What’s the most authoritative source of news and information about volcanoes and earthquakes in the Philippines? The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), a service institute of the Philippine government’s Department of Science and Technology (DOST), is principally mandated to mitigate disasters that may arise from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami and other related geotectonic phenomena.

So the best source of information on Philippine volcanic activity, earthquakes and tsunami is the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology website (http://www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph/). Here is a sampling of information provided by PHIVOLCS.

Ask remithome: Required Recipient Bank Account Information

Question: I want to send money for deposit to my recipient’s bank account in the Philippines. What information do I need request from my recipient?

Answer: The table below lists the information you need to request from your recipient in order to send money for deposit to his or her Philippine bank account. To set up a recipient profile for bank deposits, log into your remithome account, Add Recipient from the Quick Links menu, and enter your recipient’s name exactly as it appears on the Philippine bank account (see explanation below). Choose “Credit to existing bank account” as the Delivery Method.

Required Information

Explanation and Examples

Exact Name on Bank Account

You will need the EXACT name on the bank account, including any middle name or initial used. For example if the name on the account is Juan Marco dela Cruz, do NOT enter Juan dela Cruz or Juan M. dela Cruz.

If the bank account is a JOINT ACCOUNT, enter the names exactly as they appear on the bank account. For example, if the joint account is registered as Juan Marco dela Cruz and/or Ma. Teresa R. dela Cruz, enter the name exactly this way. (You can put one name in the FIRST NAME field, “and/or” in the MIDDLE NAME OR INITIAL field, and the other name in the LAST NAME field.)

Bank Name

You will need the name of your recipient’s bank. There are a lot of banks with similar names, so if your recipient says her bank is BPI, clarify whether she means “Bank of the Philippine Islands”, “BPI Direct Savings Bank” or “BPI Family Savings Bank”.

Bank Branch

Enter Head Office if your recipient does not know the Bank Branch.

Bank Account Number

Make sure that you enter the Bank Account Number. (This is NOT the same as the number on the ATM card or cash card).

Account Type

Ask whether the bank account is a Savings or Checking account.

Currency

Ask whether the account is a Philippine Peso account (this is most common) or a U.S. Dollar account.

Please note that you do NOT need a SWIFT Code to send money for bank deposit through remithome.
